Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the main international airport serving Los Angeles and the surrounding metropolitan area in the U.S. state of California. LAX is located in the Westchester neighborhood of the city of Los Angeles, 18 miles southwest of Downtown Los Angeles. The airport is operated by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), which is a branch of the Los Angeles city government. LAX covers 3,500 acres of land and has four parallel runways. In 2022, LAX handled 65,924,298 passengers, making it the world’s sixth-busiest airport. It was also among the top ten busiest airports in 2023 according to the Airports Council International rankings.

As the largest and busiest international airport on the West Coast of the United States, LAX is a major international gateway for the country, serving as a connection point for passengers traveling internationally, such as to East and Southeast Asia, Australasia, Mexico, and Central America. The airport holds the record for the world’s busiest origin and destination airport, with a large percentage of travelers beginning or ending their trips in Los Angeles. In 2019, approximately 88% of travelers at LAX were origination and destination passengers, while 12% were connecting.
LAX is also the only airport to rank among the top five U.S. airports for both passenger and cargo traffic. The airport has a rich history, starting with its establishment in 1928, when the city leased the land and converted it from fields used to grow wheat, barley, and lima beans into a dirt landing strip. The airport opened on October 1, 1928, and has since grown to become a major hub, focus city, or operating base for numerous passenger airlines. Some of the initial airport structures, such as Hangar No. 1, remain standing and in use at the airport, adding to its historical significance.
The airport was initially used by private pilots and flying schools. The city hoped that Los Angeles would become the main passenger hub for the area, but it struggled to attract carriers away from established airports such as Burbank Airport and Grand Central Airport in Glendale. Aviation manufacturers around the airport were busy providing aircraft for the allied powers, while the flying schools experienced high demand. In January 1942, the military took control of the airport, stationing fighter planes and building naval gun batteries in the nearby ocean dunes.

An OK airport. It is designed so passengers do not have access to all areas of the airport, which means not all lounges are accessible. This is frustrating. Learn from Atlanta LAX.
It’s a very large airport and it is well-signed posted so it’s easy to follow. Be prepared for lots of walking. And lots is going on at this airport to enjoy.
The smallest gate seating areas in terminal 6. You have to look for seating at other gates until your flight departs. Best parts. Family restrooms with little ones’ bathroom size. Wait in line if it’s not vacant. Way better than regular bathrooms where you also stay in long lines. Breakfast… well it’s airport food.

I would have to say this isn’t the best airport. There should be improvements made, especially in baggage claims. There is no indication if you should wait around if your luggage is coming or not.There should be a better way for everyone to get picked up when they arrive and leave when they depart as well. All in all, there should be some renovation
Absolute chaos. I always go from Burbank or Long Beach airports to avoid this circus show. But at last I had to arrive here from Miami this New Year weekend and it is as terrible as i remember. Yes it was a holiday weekend, so ill cut it some slack but no. Absolute nightmare.
