It is just ahead of Comcast and AT&T in these categories. Charter is also the fifth-largest telephone provider based on the number of residential lines. In late 2012, Thomas Rutledge, a longtime Cablevision executive, became CEO of Charter, and the company relocated its corporate headquarters from St. Louis, Missouri, to Stamford, Connecticut. However, many of its operations remained in St. Louis. Approximately one month later, on March 19, 2013, Charter announced that Liberty Media, a company controlled by former TCI CEO John C. Malone, had acquired 27.3% of its shares, making it its single largest shareholder. The purchase was made primarily through the purchase of shares held by investment funds following Charter’s 2009 reorganization.

On May 18, 2016, Charter completed the acquisition of Time Warner Cable and its sister company, Bright House Networks, making it the third-largest pay television service provider in the United States. Additionally, Charter was ranked No. 70 in the 2019 Fortune 500 list of the largest United States corporations by total revenue. Charter also began swapping customers with other systems to improve the geographic clustering of its systems. December 1999, it signed a letter of intent with AT&T Corporation to swap 1.3 million cable subscribers in St. Louis, as well as in Alabama, Georgia, and Missouri. In 2000, Charter Communications bought select AT&T cable markets, including Reno, Nevada, and the City of St. Louis.

In 2001, Charter signed an agreement with MSN to offer MSN content and services to its broadband customers. Charter received several awards in the same year, including the Outstanding Corporate Growth Award from the Association for Corporate Growth and the R.E. “Ted” Turner Innovator of the Year Award from the Southern Cable Telecommunications Association.

In February 2009, Charter Communications announced its plan to file for Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code, allowing it to pay its debt obligations and cancel its obligations to shareholders. The company filed for prearranged bankruptcy on March 28, 2009, with the expectation of reducing its debt by $8 billion, adding $3 billion of new investment, and refinancing other debt.

On April 28, 2014, Comcast and Charter announced that assuming Comcast’s merger with Time Warner Cable was successful, Charter would acquire 1.4 million Comcast/Time Warner Cable customers.

I can’t speak for the internet customer service itself, but they have been nothing but pleasant and helpful regarding my late father’s account. They have been professional, and prompt, and closed things without hassle rather than sending things over to one of those shady collection businesses.

My experience with Spectrum is the polar opposite of what complainants here say they have had. We have TV, internet, voice and wireless. Pricing is reasonable, and service is outstanding. Recently had a wiring problem. In November 2014, Liberty’s interests in Charter and its minority stake in Time Warner Cable were spun off into a separate holding company called Liberty Broadband Corporation,[33] of which Malone controlled 47.1% by early 2015.

The guys who came to install my WiFi and TV and one of the guys who went next door to my parent’s house to get things set up for their service were wonderful! I couldn’t ask for better men,! Their names were Ted and Dakota, terrific people and did a wonderful job.

Awesome charter communications customer service. I had internal work done which included painting. The cable in my room wasn’t working and I was busy and didn’t have time to call. They called me and said they would like to schedule a maintenance visit. I said “ok” and I then asked about my problem.
