He initially missed the deadline to apply for funding through Y Combinator but eventually got a meeting by using the Instacart mobile app to deliver a six-pack of beer from 21st Amendment Brewery to a Y Combinator partner and was admitted to the summer of 2012 batch. Y Combinator helped Mehta raise $2.3 million in funding and enabled him to meet his two co-founders, Max Mullen and Brandon Leonardo. The company’s name is a combination of “maple,” representing Canada, and “bear,” for the logo on the California state flag, as Mehta grew up in Canada and moved to California.
In September 2023, the company became public through an initial public offering, raising $660 million and valuing the company at about $10 billion. Mehta left the company after it went public. By May 2018, Instacart was available for use in 11 Canadian markets and was planning expansions for five more markets.
In November 2018, Instacart announced the national expansion of Instacart Pickup, a grocery click-and-collect service, whereby users pick up their pre-packaged orders at the grocery store.
By the end of December 2019, Instacart’s alcohol delivery service included over 30 new partners in more than 20 states and Washington, D.C., such as Albertsons, Aldi, Sam’s Club, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Sprouts Farmers Market, The Fresh Market, and Total Wine & More. In August 2013, Instacart introduced an annual membership service called Instacart Express. In June 2022, Instacart Express was rebranded as Instacart+, and new family shopping features were added. These included the ability to share membership and collaborate on shopping carts with another family member for free.

I have used Instacart before, but I got the flu, and it was a necessity to get the items I could eat while sick…I stayed within 1 store to make it easier for the shopper & after picking everything out, it was at my door within 90 minutes…I gave a decent tip & the fee (Both Online) was well worth it (Cheap Enough)…What a Lifesaver & the shopper left it right inside my porch at my door….Thank You.
My experience with Instacart has been pretty good with few exceptions. However, if one is making purchases from Instacart-Kroger with wine; please check that they delivered that product with all else.

I’ve placed about eight orders with Instacart so my experience is with seven different shoppers, one shopped twice for me. I live in a part of the country where Fry’s Food is a primary store, which is part of the Kroger family of stores. Before using Instacart, I shopped at the store these shoppers go to for a few years. For some reason, the shoppers I’ve had a shop for me aren’t very skilled at buying groceries.
I have usually had a good experience with Instacart until recently. I received someone else’s order. Tip and delivery fees were not refunded. I placed the order again and received a really bad replacement. They did not refund the full-value replacement, just the extra that I had to pay even though the replacement was useless to me. I am not planning on making much use of Instacart going forward.
