DHL was founded in San Francisco, United States, in 1969. By the late 1970s, the company had expanded its services worldwide. Adrian Dalsey and Larry Hillblom oversaw the daily operations of the company until its eventual bankruptcy in 1983. At its peak, DHL Air Cargo had over 100 workers, management, and pilots.

DHL was initially interested in offshore and intercontinental deliveries, but the success of FedEx prompted the company’s domestic expansion in 1983. In 1998, Deutsche Post began acquiring shares in DHL and reached controlling interest in 2001. By December 2002, it had acquired all outstanding shares. The company then merged DHL into its Express division while expanding the use of the DHL brand to other Deutsche Post divisions, business units, and subsidiaries. Larry Hillblom, who later founded DHL, worked as a courier for the insurance company Michael’s, Poe & Associates (MPA) while studying law at the University of California, Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law in the 1960s. He ran courier duty between Oakland International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport, picking up packages for the last flight of the day and returning on the first flight the next morning up to five times a week.

In December 2014, Deutsche Post DHL acquired StreetScooter, a small manufacturer of electric vehicles, as a part of its long-term objective to achieve zero emissions in its delivery operations. By the end of 2016, StreetScooter had produced around 2,000 vehicles.

My package from China arrived as tracked, but the delivery driver didn’t leave it. However, the customer service and office at 1922 Old Murfreesboro Road were exceptional. The driver was suspended, and I received a lovely care package later, which was amazing! Thank you, DHL, for your care and support.

The few times DHL handled my shipments, they were all delayed. My packages never came on time and they always miss the target date/special occasions I ordered my packages for. Therefore, by the time I got the package the purpose of Essence of it has been gone. This is so saddening. Please fix your service DHL.

DHL has delivered many packages to me or had a part in transporting a package to another company to deliver. They have been on time. I’ve been notified of delivery details and I have to say all packages were handled professionally because nothing was ever damaged or missing.

Great for shipments to the Philippines and all of SE Asia. Beware customs charges 30% duty. 13% goes to the government, 17% to customs officials. Value is determined by insurance and/or stated value. Simply undervalue or underinsure.
